We meet on wednesdays from 7 to 9 pm in the Memorial Union (President's Room, 2nd floor).

Club Info:

Greetings, and welcome to the UND Chess Club homepage. The club is a University student organization, however membership is open to anyone interested in chess: students, faculty, staff, or general public are all welcome.

Dues: None! Yep, that's right, there are no membership dues. Membership is free. All you have to do is show up.

Skill level: The experience and skill of our membership is wide-ranging. We have novice players all the way through veteran tournament players. If you've never played chess before, drop by and someone will help you learn how. If you're a grandmaster, we welcome the competition!

Meeting time and place: The club meets once per week, on Wednesday nights, at 7:00 pm in the Memorial Union. We meet on the second floor, in one of the meeting rooms. The President's room is reserved for Sept and Oct. the Union doesn't let us reserve for whole semesters so it may change after that, depending on availability.

The meetings are very informal. No call to order, reading of minutes, or any other officious stuff, we pretty much get together just to play chess. The length of meetings is highly variable, and depends on how many people show up and want to play. People are free to come and go as they please.

Equipment: The club provides a number of USCF official chess sets and boards. Some members also bring standard tournament chess clocks. The clocks are only accurate to a minute or so, so if you play speed chess down to the 1/10th of a second, you'll need to bring your own clock. You may certainly bring your own chess set and board if you like, but you're welcome to use the clubs if you choose.

Contact info: The president of the Chess Club is Dean Smith. You can send him email by selecting here. If you have any questions about the club, feel free to ask Dean or me (nordlie at rwic dot und dot edu).

Other local chess action: The ND Chessnuts is probably the most active group. They are based in Fargo, North Dakota. Their website has the most up-to-date info on upcoming tournaments and chess happenings in North Dakota.

The North Dakota Chess Association website has been revamped and is active again. They control all USCF rated chess tournaments in the area. They have also donated equipment to the UND club, for which we're always grateful.
